London Fire Brigade says the Landmann Way recycling centre fire in Bermondsey has been fully extinguished. Lewisham Council says the centre remains closed and waste and recycling services will be affected.

London Fire Brigade says the fire at the Landmann Way recycling centre in Bermondsey has been fully extinguished after crews worked through Monday night. The centre remains closed, and Lewisham Council says waste and recycling services, including collections, will be affected.
Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters tackled the fire at the recycling centre on Landmann Way, the brigade said in its Tuesday morning update.
Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield said crews had worked hard overnight and the fire had been fully extinguished. At its height, the blaze involved a large amount of refuse and the roof of a warehouse unit. A van and a car were destroyed, and one man was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service.
The cause is under investigation. The brigade has not announced a reopening time for the site.
Fire control officers took the first of multiple calls at 5.32pm on Monday 8 June. Crews were sent from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Greenwich and surrounding fire stations.
The fire was under control by 11.57pm. Two 32-metre turntable ladders were used to fight the fire from above, while the brigade’s Drone Team gave the incident commander an aerial view. A Hose Layer Unit also helped supply water over longer distances to the fire ground.
During the fire, residents near the scene were advised to keep windows and doors closed because of heavy smoke.
Loose embers were also reported during the incident. The brigade said residents could pour water on loose embers if they were concerned, but should call 999 immediately if anything caught alight.
Now that the fire has been extinguished, residents should avoid the closed site and follow updates from the fire brigade and council. Anyone who sees a new fire or immediate danger should call 999.
Lewisham Council says the Landmann Way Reuse and Recycling Centre is closed because of the fire and an ongoing investigation. It said waste and recycling services, including collections, will be impacted while alternative arrangements are worked through with neighbouring boroughs.
Residents are being told to put bins out as normal. Anyone who has booked a bulky waste collection should leave it out as planned, with the council saying it will collect as close to the scheduled time as possible.
Council teams have been clearing as much as they can around Landmann Way. Once they can fully access the area, they plan further clean-up work and the removal of remaining debris from surrounding streets and parks.
Lewisham Council says it currently has no indication, after discussions with the site operator, that asbestos was stored at the location. It said suspected asbestos reports are still being treated with caution and will be investigated, with specialist contractors used where there is uncertainty or risk.

Residents who spot debris can report it through Lewisham’s Love Clean Streets system, or call 020 8314 6000 for urgent issues.
The next important updates are likely to be the cause of the fire, the reopening plan for Landmann Way and any changes to waste collections. Further updates should come from London Fire Brigade or Lewisham Council if the investigation or local service impact changes.
